Zika is a disease caused by a virus primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes — the same species responsible for the biting you feel in Delaware and Maryland backyards every summer. Most people infected do not develop symptoms. About one in five develop the disease, and symptoms are generally mild. Anyone who lives or travels in impacted areas can be infected.
Common Symptoms
The most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms typically begin two to seven days after being bitten. Zika can also be transmitted sexually, or from a pregnant mother to her baby during pregnancy or around the time of birth. More than 5 cases were confirmed in Delaware, as reported in the News Journal.
